is Meridia? Meridia
is a 5, 10, or 15 Mg capsule of Sibutramine. Numerous research studies
have documented an average weight loss of up to 12 kg / 26 lb over a period of
6 to 12 months. Of all the three classes of weight loss drugs, Meridia is probably
the most effective according to studies. But it is also the most expensive as
well. [ BACK
TO TOP] How
does Meridia work? Meridia
acts by increasing the concentration of chemical substances called monoamines
(noradrenalin, serotonin and dopamine) in the brain. This allows a multi-pronged
action at various centers, stimulating the sympathetic nervous system and the
satiety center, along with other affects on metabolism to ultimately decrease
appetite and reduce food intake. Sibutramine,
the active ingredient in Meridia, does not cause a decrease in the lean body weight
(the non-fat content of the body) or blood sugar levels. It decreases the uric
acid levels, which is useful since higher uric acid levels in higher weight groups
can lead to gout. When combined with a low-calorie
diet and exercise, studies have documented weight loss anywhere between 2-12 kg
/ 4-26 lb over a period of 6 to 12 months. Information from follow-up studies
suggests that this weight loss can then be maintained for a substantial amount
of time on diet and exercise alone following treatment. [
BACK TO TOP] How
do I take Meridia? Always
consult your doctor when considering any prescription diet pill! Take Meridia
exactly as directed by your physician with a full glass of water and never exceed
the recommended dosage! Meridia
is usually taken once a day and can be taken with or without food. Meridia
is generally prescribed at 10mg per day, starting approximately 2 hours after
breakfast. This dosing schedule provides adequate cover for the next 12 to 14
hours when most of the food intake takes place. It also prevents the stimulatory
action of the drug to interfere with sleep patterns.
The drug is normally prescribed for a 4 week period, during which the patient
is monitored for effectiveness. A close watch is kept on blood pressure and heart
rate which tend to go up-- especially if the drug is working. A minimal weight
loss of 4 lb should be achieved during this period or therapy should be re-evaluated.
In case this target is not achieved, the therapy should be either discontinued
or dosage can be increased to 15mg / day in the absence of side effects. Total
treatment time should not exceed a 12 week period. [
BACK TO TOP] What
precautions should I consider? Individuals
with pre-existing kidney or liver diseases, and elderly patients should use extreme
caution when using Meridia. Risk factors and alternative medications should be
considered if you have heart disease, glaucoma, seizures, stoke, gall-stones or
past history of drug abuse. Meridia may interact
with other medicines and cause a condition called Serotonin Syndrome. This syndrome
requires immediate medical attention and may include one or more of the following
symptoms: anxiety, restlessness, loss of consciousness, confusion, weakness, tremor,
poor coordination, fever, shivering, sweating, vomiting, and others. While
taking Meridia, do not take any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines
without first talking to your doctor, especially weight-loss products, tryptophan
(L-tryptophan, 5-HTP), decongestants, antidepressants, cough suppressants, lithium
(Eskalith, Lithobid, Lithonate, others), and migraine medicines. Meridia
is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether Meridia
will harm an unborn baby. Do not take sibutramine without first talking to your
doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. It is not
known whether Meridia passes into breast milk, so breast feeding should be avoided
during treatment. Keep
in mind that Meridia is intended to be used in addition to healthy eating habits
and exercise. For the best results, your doctor will most likely recommend a low-calorie
diet and exercise. Do not increase or in any way change your dosage without consulting
your doctor. [
BACK TO TOP] What
are the possible side effects? If
you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Meridia
and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:
- an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing
of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
- easy
bleeding, bruising under the skin , bloody gums, or blood in your urine or stool;
- new or worsening shortness of breath;
- an
irregular heartbeat;
- high blood pressure
(severe headache, blurred vision); or

Other, less serious side effects may
be more likely to occur. Continue to take Meridia and talk to your doctor if you
experience: - restlessness or tremor,
- nervousness
or anxiety,
- mild headache or dizziness,
- insomnia,
- dry
mouth or an unpleasant taste in your mouth, or
- constipation.
As stated above, Meridia may interact

symptoms: anxiety, restlessness, loss of consciousness, confusion, weakness, tremor,
poor coordination, fever, shivering, sweating, vomiting, a fast heartbeat, and
