What is Xenical? Xenical
(also known as Orlistat) is a 120 Mg capsule that targets fat absorbtion of the
body rather than appetite suppression. Unlike appetite suppressants which are
only effective for several weeks, Xenical is safe for long term use (up to 1-2
years). Xenical is a prescription medication and requires a doctors approval for
treatment. [ BACK
TO TOP] How
does Xenical work? Xenical
inhibits the enzyme that helps absorb fats in the stomach and the small intestine.
As undigested fats are kept from being absorbed, the resulting caloric deficit
has a positive effect on weight loss. Absorption of the drug is therefore not
needed for activity and systemic exposure to Xenical is minimal. As
with most diet medications, it has been shown that patients treated with Xenical
have improved results when used in combination with proper diet and exercise.
Thus, a complete, low calorie weight loss regimen should be administered during
treatment with this drug. [
BACK TO TOP] How
do I take Xenical? Always
consult your doctor when considering any prescription diet pill! Take Xenical
exactly as directed by your physician with a full glass of water and never exceed
the recommended dosage! Xenical
is usually taken with each main meal that contains fat. Xenical can be taken during
meals or up to one hour after a meal. Each time you take Xenical, your meal should
contain no more than 30% calories from fat. Evenly divide your daily intake of
fat, carbohydrates, and protein over three meals a day. If you miss a meal, or
if you have a meal without fat, you can skip your dose of Xencical for that meal. PLEASE
NOTE: Xenical may decrease your body's absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins.
To ensure adequate nutrition, your doctor may recommend taking a multivitamin
that contains vitamins D, E, K, and beta-carotene. Take your vitamin supplement
once a day, at least 2 hours before or after a dose of Xenical. [
BACK TO TOP] What
precautions should I consider? Xenical
is not recommended for people who have an existing difficulty with digestion and
absorption (chronic malabsorption syndrome) or people with a history of renal
or gall stones. Persons who demonstrate hypersensitivity
to the drug; manifesting as rash, itching, transient blebs, eyelid or lip swelling--
should also refrain from using Xenical due to potentially severe allergic reactions
(anaphylaxis). Although Xenical is in the FDA
pregnancy category B (meaning that it is not expected to harm an unborn baby),
do not take Xenical without first talking to your doctor if you're pregnant. It
is not known whether Xenical passes into breast milk, so breast feeding should
be avoided. Xenical is not safe for treatment of children below the age of 12
years. As stated above, Xenical may decrease
your body's absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins. To ensure adequate nutrition,
your doctor may recommend taking a multivitamin that contains vitamins D, E, K,
and beta-carotene. Take your vitamin supplement once a day, at least 2 hours before
or after a dose of Xenical. Keep
in mind that Xenical is intended to be used in addition to healthy eating habits
and exercise. For the best results, your doctor will most likely recommend a low-calorie
diet, exercise, and multivitamins. Do not increase or in any way change your dosage
without consulting your doctor. [
BACK TO TOP] What
are the possible side effects? Stop
taking Xenical and seek emergency medical attention if you experience a rare allergic
reaction including shortness of breath; closing of your throat; swelling of your
lips, tongue, or face; or hives. Other, less
serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Xenical and
talk to your doctor if you experience: - oily
spotting;
- oily or fatty stools;
-
orange or brown colored oil in your stool;
-
gas with discharge, or an oily discharge;
-
an urgent need to go to the bathroom;
- an
inability to control bowel movements, or;
-
an increased number of bowel movements.
The
bowel changes listed above are a natural effect of blocking fat and indicate that
Xenical is working. They generally occur early in treatment, particularly after
meals containing higher amounts of fat than are recommended. These symptoms are
usually temporary and lessen or disappear as you continue treatment. [
