How
was the Slim Fast program started?
Slim Fast was created in 1977 and has been available
for over 25 years. It originally started with milk
and soy-based meal replacements developed by the
Thompson Medical Company, but has grown to include
a wide-range of other weight loss products as well.
In 2000, Slim Fast Foods was acquired by Unilever
which still carries the brand.

How
does the Slim Fast program work?
The Slim Fast program, a well-known form of "liquid
diet", replaces several of the meals you eat
with shakes. The goal of the Slim Fast plan is to
burn more calories then you consume, while eating
healthy foods that provide you with proper vitamins,
fiber, and essential nutrients.
The plan calls for a shake at breakfast and lunch,
and then a sensible dinner. You are also allowed
two additional pieces of fruit and a Slim Fast nutrition
bar as needed during the day. The sensible dinner
may be used for any meal, as long as the two other
meals are Slim Fast shakes. The diet, which averages
about 1,200 calories a day, will cause weight loss
for most people.
Exercise is also a key ingredient with the Slim
Fast diet plan. You are encouraged to find an activity
that you enjoy and continue doing it regularly.
It can be a simple activity like walking or swimming,
but consistency is the key.

What
are the Pro's of the Slim Fast plan?
Dieters not only achieve short-term weight loss
using the Slim Fast program, but numerous published
studies have shown long-term sucess as well. This
program allows people to eat many of the foods they
enjoy, as well as uses convenient, pre-packaged
meal replacement products to simplify the process.
Because dieters don't have to worry about counting
calories or measuring food quantities, the Slim
Fast plan is one of the easiest diet plans to follow.
The Slim Fast plan is also much cheaper than many
other popular diet programs. Not only are the products
less expensive in most cases, there are no "membership"
fees, books or other materials to buy.

What
are the Con's of the Slim Fast plan?
One of the main problems with the Slim Fast plan
is that it does little to educate people about their
eating habits. While replacing high-calorie breakfasts
and lunches with a shake or nutrition bar will likely
result in weight loss, returning to poor eating
habits once you stop taking these products means
you're likely to put the weight on again. Most nutritional
experts recognize that if meal replacement products
are to be effective at keeping the weight off long
term, it’s essential to provide education and support
on healthy eating when meal replacement products
are no longer used.
